Tips For Choosing The Right Rain Jacket If You Work Outside

When you work outside on a regular basis, it is important to have the right rain gear to wear so you can still do your job properly on a rainy or stormy day. One of the keys to being ready to work in the rain is to own a quality rain jacket that can keep you warm and dry when the weather is not cooperating. Continue reading to learn more about choosing the right rain jacket to wear while working outside:

Understand the Difference Between Waterproof and Water-Resistant

While shopping for a rain jacket, you will likely see some that are advertised as waterproof while others may be water resistant. A rain jacket that is waterproof and breathable will keep all rain off of your skin while wicking away sweat. This type of rain jacket is ideal if your outdoor job requires exertion and constant activity. A rain jacket that is waterproof but not breathable is basically just a rain slicker-- it will prevent you from getting wet, but it is lot ideal for wearing for an extended amount of time since sweat and humidity can build up under the jacket.

Water-resistant jackets are also designed to be breathable and are often make of light-weight windbreaker material. The material used in water-resistant rain jackets can hold up well when its sprinkling or there is a light rain, but it will not protect you from getting wet during moderate to heavy rainfall. A water-resistant jacket is a good option if you live in an area where you will be working outside while it is drizzling, but should be avoided if heavy rain is a regular occurrence.

Choosing Windproof vs. Wind-Resistant

In many cases, when there is rain there is some wind. After deciding on whether you need a waterproof or water-resistant jacket, you will then need to think about protection from the wind. If you buy a waterproof jacket, there is a very good chance that it is also rated as being windproof. The material in these types of jackets are thicker and designed to protect your skin from a variety of weather elements.

Like water-resistant jackets, wind-resistant jackets can be a good choice in less severe weather conditions. A wind-resistant jacket can keep you dry and warm when the winds pick up, but on a moderately to severely windy day the thin material used to make wind-resistant rain jackets most likely won't be enough to keep you comfortable while you're outside working.
